Mystik U #1

When it comes to DC’s magic characters they often tend to get the shaft. Whilst Marvel has many of their magic based characters front and centre in their comics and on the screen, whilst it seems DC would prefer to hide their magic characters. This is really one of the reasons that I was excited about this new book. It wasn’t a justice League Dark reboot, but after reading it I’m positive about the rest of the series.
The book basically starts in a post-apocalyptic world where we see the earth in ruins. We see Dr Psychic is hurt and it seems that only Zatanna is left. In the book, it seems that Dr Psychic uses zatanna’s energy to go back in time so that she can stop Malevolence. This actually provides a good excuse to de-age a lot of the characters.
The book really tries to introduce a lot of these new characters and to establish their abilities and the range of their abilities. This is alright but I did find it to be repetitive a lot of the time, and felt like it was being used to fill pages, which is basically how I felt about the green monster that would pop up often.
In conclusion, it is a good start to the book and does provide an interesting mystery as we later find out that one of the kids will grow up to become Malevolence and destroy everything like we saw before.
