Nightwing: The New Order #3
Writer: Kyle Higgins
Artist: Trevor McCarthy
Colorist: Dean White
Publisher: DC Comics
When Nightwing: The New Order was first announced, I was more intrigued if anything. The series sounded like Nightwing kills the DC Universe, but the first issues showed us that it wasn’t really this. Instead it is about how Nightwing deals with his son having powers in a world he created where powered people were discriminated against. The first 2 issues were really great, so it is disappointing that issue 3 doesn’t live up to the previous issues.
One of my major issues in this storyline is actually brought up in the book. If Nightwing was quarantining powered individuals, surely, he must have come to grips with the fact that he may eventually have a relative who is one. Even one of the characters points out how they had to put his father in stasis. This creates a major flaw in the presentation of Nightwing as he seems really hypocritical, and makes it hard for the reader to route for Dick, as there is that hypocrisy that would always be at the back of readers’ minds.
We also get to know where other members of the Bat-Family are and also what has happened to the Batcave. The Batcave was basically turned into a tourist site. The two Bat-Family members we meet are Batwoman and Tim Drake. Tim now has a son, and appears to live a quiet life, whilst it’s revealed that Batwoman is one of the heads of the Crusaders.
In conclusion, this issue was alright, and had some really cool cameos and appearances at the end of the book. However it feels like it is lacking the original direction and push it had in the first 2 issues.
