Ragman #1

Writer: Ray Fawkes
Artist: Inaki Miranda
Colorist: Eva De La Cruz
Publisher: DC Comics

Like most people my only experience of the character of Ragman is from the tv show Arrow. In Arrow Rory gets his powers as a nuclear bomb goes off and the rags bind to him. With this first issue Fawkes does a different origin for the character of Ragman and really uses this issue to establish the origin.

The origin is really well done as it is both interesting and mysterious. Rory and his team are trying to look for gold in a secret tomb but they are attacked by these ragged beings with glowing eyes, and only Rory escapes. The beginning shows us how Rory deals with this, by getting help from a support group.

As the story progresses we are shown that there may be a link between the original attack and Rory’s mental problems as another member of the support group spots these strange beings as well. Near the end of the book we do get to finally see him in his ragman costume and the art in that double page spread and the rest of the book is so amazing. Fawkes also reveals something really interesting about the suit that I won’t spoil.

In conclusion, the first issue of Ragman is really solid. Not only does it present the reader with a mystery, but also shows us the effects of going off to war. Fawkes makes Rory a sympathetic character and makes the Ragman identity wholly interesting.
