Titans #11
Writer: Dan Abnett, Christopher Priest and Benjamin Percy
Artist: Brett Booth
Colourist: Andrew Dalhouse and Carrie Strachan
Publisher: DC Comics
This is the first issue of the Lazarus Contract and the build-up for it has actually been pretty good. In Deathstroke the theme running through all of Christopher Priest’s arcs is this key theme of family whilst in Abnett’s Titans most of their enemies have been pointing to have some involvement in Hive. Percy’s Teen Titans have had no interaction with Hive, which is fitting since they are not in this issue.
I have really been enjoying Christopher Priest’s Deathstroke and I would say it is definitely one, if not my favorite Rebirth Title. I have been enjoying Percy’s Teen Titans as the interaction between the team is really strong. I have felt Lukewarm with Abnett’s Titans, which a real shame since I’m loving his Aquaman and the Titans are one of my favorite teams. It has some strong moments in arcs but for me overall arcs are just alright.
This issue ties up some loose ends with Deathstroke as he gets a new pair of eyes to resolve him being blind. Whilst he is resting he is thinking of his son Grant and the writers give us their version of what happened to Grant basically. The crossover focuses on Grant so it is apt that the writers would establish this character for new readers and how he may be different to previous incarnations.
We see Deathstroke capture the Titan’s Wally West and puts him in an interesting position as he says that if he Wally saves Grant by going back in time, then he would give up being a villain. This puts Wally in a strange position as Deathstroke not killing would definitely benefit everyone, but he can’t mess with the time stream. Wally refuses but luckily Deathstroke has the other Wally to use, which is probably how he gains his speed powers. This is also most likely how the Titans get involved.
I would say it was an alright issue and puts the crossover at a pretty good footing so far. Hopefully it continues to only get better and the interactions between the two teams are really great. I cannot wait to see Damian meet the Titans.
