Weekly Spinner Picks is all about the hot comics of the week and getting to know the tastes of the writers at Comics: The Gathering. Each week the CTG contributors spotlight which comics they are most looking forward to on Wednesday and how those picks got to the top of their to-read piles. Let us know if you agree or not with our picks and most importantly don’t forget to add your list!

I'm first up so away I go:

Hawkeye #19: At long last my favorite archer marks his return this month! I can’t remember when the last issue came out or what took place! I’ll have to do some long box digging to refresh my memory. This issue is as always written by Matt Fraction...well sort of. This issue will be a silent one dealing with deafness. After a battle leaves Barton with severe ear damage the story will focus on how he deals with hearing loss. The entire issue will use sign language and visuals to tell the story. The visuals will be handled by the title’s main artist David Aja. As readers of the series are aware this will be the second silent issue the duo have given us. The first one being this year’s Eisner Winner for best single issue, Pizza is my Business, as announced this weekend at SDCC.

Sandman Overture #3: Well it’s been a year since this series was originally teased at the 2013 SDCC and we are now getting issue 3 of this long-delayed Vertigo series. Now while I am highly anticipated the issue I may just collect them and give them a thorough read when the series is complete. I fully realize that writer Neil Gaiman and artist JH Williams have high standards to maintain considering the expectations for the series and I have absolute faith they will deliver.

Low #1: Well what do we have here? Another #1 issue from Image Comics on my list! What can I say I’m a huge Image fan! As a bonus this sci-fi adventure is written by one of my favorite writers, Rick Remender, with art provided by Greg Tocchini. The earth’s surface has been torched by the sun’s radiation and humanity has moved to radiation-shielded cities below the sea. I’m on board!

Black Science #7: Woah double Remender this week! How can one comic book fan be so lucky?? Another Image series I’m absolutely in love with. This issue kicks off the second story arc of the series. This issue as usual is beautifully drawn by Matteo Scalera. If you haven’t checked out this series yet you can pick up the very affordable volume 1 for $9.99 which contains the first arc.

I actually have a great week where four out of five of my pulls are highly anticipated (the fifth being Futures End which I'm just coasting on now and hoping doesn't suck by the end of it.) Anyways, here's what I'm anticipating:

Black Science #7: After a rousing and surprising first arc, Black Science is back in what I imagine will only more out of control as they go. Basically the dysfunctional family version of Lost In Space, now is a good time for new readers to hop on before it's too late. So go pick up a trade and get ready for a wild ride.

Low #1: Honestly, I'll give anything Rick Remender writes a chance because he's consistently wowed me with inventive and heartbreaking storytelling. He says that this book will be more uplifting than his previous works so I'm excited to see what that means.

Uncanny Avengers #22: ANOTHER Rick Remender book. After this entire run, I finally get to see Kang do what he does best, CONQUER. With this book now serving as a sort of lead-in to the upcoming Avengers & X-Men: AXIS event, I'm excited to see how everything falls apart for Havok and the gang.

The Wake #10: A mini-series so good that it WON an Eisner for best mini-series before it has even finished. I have to agree with the award. The Wake has been many things. It's been horror, adventure, post-apocalyptic, but it's always been one important thing: fun.

My list was basically stolen from me by my preceeding commentor. As a Remender fan, all his titles Black Science, Low, and Uncanny Avengers are coming out, so it's a serious treat for some intense and brilliant stories.

But LOW #1, I think I'm most excited for out of the three Remender titles, mostly because it's new and I'm not entirely sure what we're about to get. Remender has an uncanny knack for sci-fi and I am a huge sucker for strange aquatic dystopian sort of ideas. Plus there's a special introductory issue with 30 pages of painted art; heck yeah!

And because I'm a sucker for stories under the sea, with the finale coming with WAKE #10, I can't help but to be excited for this too. Snyder's been known to throw the punches and give a big twist, and we just might be in for a doozy, but it's been such a solid series so far, I'm sure this will hold up just the same.

Okay, and now I'll try and be different and not talk about Hawkeye or any other Remender titles, so my latest series that has genuinely got me looking forward to each release, and impatient to wait for another issue, is SECRET AVENGERS. Ales Kot and Michael Walsh are seriously my favourite power pair right now. Secret Avengers has been quirky and action packed. Walsh's art is colourful and pure delight, and it's paced perfectly. It's a genuine thrill each issue, so I'm not lying when I say it's one of my most anticipated this week.

...And CYCLOPS because he's my baby.

Thank you Toribee for reminding me that Cyclops is coming out and it is awesome.

Steve, give up on Sandman.  The releases will be worse than Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk.

Besides that, looks like a great week!  And every book I want is on my pull list, so I don’t need to run over to the comic store on my lunch break incase the single issue they bought gets sold to someone else.

Black Science #7:

After the last issue, everything is up in the air & I’m hoping this sets a good foundation for what might be the next six issue arc.  My nightmare is that it’s a one-shot that does nothing for the overall story.

East of West #14:

The endless nation is coming!  Golden circle robots!

Low #1:

Can I just give all Image all my money?

Wake #10:

I hope this is a satisfying ending.  I think I might re-read the series before taking on this one.  People seem to like it, but so far nothing has topped the collapse of the undersea lab issue(s).. I’m not into the future stuff.. Seems like Snyder’s recycling his teenaged Darwin the dolphin fan fiction.

Hawkeye #19:

Hit and miss with this book.  Hope it hits this week, but I’m keeping my hopes down.

New 52 Futures End #13:

I donno.. I need to see it thru.

Finally, I’ll probably pick something Guardians of the Galaxy off the rack because it’s HAPPENING PEOPLE!  GotG!!

Spicy Toilet's Picks of the week:

Bodies #1

4 detectives, 4 different time periods, 4 bodies.  And it’s written by Si Spencer for Vertigo.  It’s ok to be intrigued.  I have ridiculous expectations for this book.

Sandman Overture #3

Last we saw Morpheus he was hanging out with the cat version of himself.  I think, I hate how delayed the release for this title is.  I constantly have to back track with each new issue.  But then I melt into the story and it’s ok again.

Deep Gravity #1

Not really sure what to expect here but I’m hoping love motivates the main character more than anything.  So I’m giving it a shot.

George RR Martin In The House Of The Worm #1

Take an awesome book, turn it into a comic, PROFIT.  I can not wait to see the art, I’ve read the book but I just can not imagine it yet.  This one has me psyched for sure!

Low #1

Warring human clans folks!  The earth is all banged up and this satellite returned with information regarding planets that can be called home.
The Wake #10 - The conclusion.  I really dug the first arc of this book, and I've abstained from the second half until it was complete.  It garnered a pair of Eisners last weekend for Best Limited Series and Best Pencils/Inks.  I'm looking forward to spending some time and getting the rest of the story.

Guardians of the Galaxy #17/100th Anniversary Special - I'm a sucker for the Marvel cosmic stuff.  There isn't much more to be said than that.

New Avengers #21 - Man oh man.  New Avengers has gotten me re-invested in the main Marvel stories.  Infinity left a bad taste in my mouth, but the work Hickman and team have been doing on New Avengers is solid.  Our heroes are comprimising themselves bit by bit.  And I'm loving it.  Dr. Strange should be a much bigger character than he is.  Hopefully with a movie in the works we get more stories like this.

C.O.W.L. #3 - A superhero period piece based in Chicago written by Kyle Higgins?  It's like they read my mind.  More please.
